Overview of Upper Mustang Overland Tour

Join us on a memorable journey into Nepal’s “Forbidden Kingdom” with our Upper Mustang Overland Tour. In this 11-day jeep journey, you will go into the remote Upper Mustang region which lies behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. By driving in a comfortable 4×4 jeep, you will visit the high desert areas and explore the ancient Buddhist villages and see the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang without long hikes.

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour suits travelers who prefer to explore culture and experience the beautiful landscape with a bit of comfort in their lives. you will drive through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, and across impressive canyons and colorful rock-formations. The journey is against snow-capped mountains such as Nilgiri, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

This is also a rare cultural experience in this tour. Upper Mustang remained closed to foreigners until the 1990s, which helped preserve its Tibet-inspired culture and traditions. You will explore centuries-old monasteries, watch prayer flags waving in the wind, and encounter the hospitable Loba people in their traditional villages. Holy places like the Muktinath Temple draw attention to the spirituality of the area. Every night, you may have Nepali and Tibetan cuisine in cozy teahouses.

The overall journey begins with heritage tours in Kathmandu before moving westward into Mustang, bringing new experiences each day. You can see Himalayan sunrises with golden hues, the enigmatic caves on the cliffs, or simply enjoy the thrill of riding along the open mountain roads. The Upper Mustang Overland Tour is a simple but thrilling adventure into one of the most distinct areas of Nepal, with the help of experienced guides to maintain your safety and comfort. It is really an adventure of a lifetime to the core of the former Forbidden Kingdom.

Good To Know

The Mustang Overland Tour is rated as easy compared with the treks at the high altitudes because you drive by jeep rather than trek. It does not require any multi-hour climbing or camping nights thus making it accessible to most travelers with a modest level of fitness including families.

Note that the jeep rides can be long, rough, and dusty, especially between Jomsom and Lo Manthang, and the elevation is high. We include rest and acclimatization time so everyone can adjust. You may also make short strolls in villages. Summing up, this is a beginner-friendly tour in trekking terms, but the rugged Himalayan road conditions can still feel tiring.

The climate of Upper Mustang is dry and windy. An Upper Mustang Overland Tour is best in spring (March to mid-May) or fall (September to mid-November), when the weather is mild in the day, the nights crisp, the mountain views clear. Rainfall in Mustang is minimal, even in summer, because it lies in a rain shadow. However, monsoon rains (June–August) may affect the roads leading to Pokhara.

Summer (June–August) is also possible for travel since Mustang itself is dry, but monsoon rains can affect the roads to Pokhara and Jomsom, sometimes causing delays or landslides. Winter (December–February) is very cold, with freezing temperatures and snow usually closing the high passes.

Spring or fall is usually the most comfortable time, and local celebrations such as the Tiji Festival (usually in late May or early June, according to the Tibetan lunar calendar) make it even more special. The exact dates shift each year, so travelers should confirm the festival schedule in advance.

You will find a great variety of foods (Nepali, Indian, Continental, etc.) in Kathmandu and Pokhara. After reaching the trail on the Upper Mustang Overland Tour, meals are simple but nutritious. Teahouses in Mustang offer classic foods such as dal bhat (rice and lentils and curry), momos (dumplings), noodle soups and fried rice.

Such homemade meals are nutritious and provide plenty of energy. We suggest you sample the local Thakali dal bhat meal or a cup of salted butter tea as a taste of the local. Safe drinking water is always available. Our crew provides boiled or filtered water, and you can conveniently refill it in your reusable bottle. Limit drinking alcohol at high altitude, instead drink more cups of tea to keep yourself warm and hydrated.

This Upper Mustang Overland Tour reaches its highest point at about 3,950 m on mountain passes, with Lo Manthang at 3,840 m (12,600 ft) and Muktinath at 3,710 m. We ascend slowly and spend a night at Jomsom (2,743 m) to allow your body to become acclimated. The majority of travelers cope well with this altitude, though we should be careful. Be hydrated, walk gradually.

It is quite natural to experience a slight shortness of breath or a slight headache in the beginning so tell your guide about it. Our guides are experienced on altitude awareness and they have a first aid kit (including basic medicines and oxygen). In case anyone develops any serious AMS symptoms, we can rapidly drive down the mountain in a jeep to lower altitude. The risk of altitude sickness can be minimized with the right precautions.

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour does not require you to be an athlete, although a little pre-trip preparation helps. A little exercise (walking, jogging, bicycling) during the pre-travel weeks will help develop stamina on the long days on the road.

No technical hiking is required, yet you will be in a vehicle all day and be climbing up high. Pack comfortable, broken-in shoes to wander in the villages, and possibly trekking poles if you have knee problems on rough roads. You will perform well on this tour with a positive attitude and average fitness.

Most tourists can obtain a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport (15, 30 or 90 days with payment of a fee in major currencies). Alongside the regular visa there are special permits needed during the Upper Mustang overland tour. Upper Mustang is a restricted area, and we need a Restricted Area Permit (USD 500 per person for 10 days, plus USD 50 per extra day), which our team will manage.

Please note that the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Upper Mustang is only issued through government-registered trekking agencies in Kathmandu or Pokhara; it cannot be obtained individually. We also get your Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), as Mustang is in that conservation area. Remember that in Upper Mustang, it is mandatory that you have an official guide registered (you cannot travel independently). Before you start on the journey, our team will ensure that you have all your permits sorted out.

Your well-being is our first priority during the Upper Mustang Overland Tour. Our vehicle is a 4WD jeep in good condition and our driver is knowledgeable about the roads in the mountains. Always use your seatbelt and listen to your guide when going through rough roads. In order to remain healthy, maintain good hygiene: apply hand sanitizer regularly, drink only the water we serve (boiled or filtered), and avoid eating raw foods.

Our Nepali and Tibetan food is delicious and does not cause any problems to your stomach when it is fresh. Our guide has a first aid kit in case of any minor problems. We have contingency plans in case we get seriously ill or injured; we can drive to the nearest clinic (Jomsom has a small hospital), or helicopter evacuation can be used.

On our Upper Mustang overland tour, we will handle all your travel logistics. At Kathmandu we will meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel by car. The actual trip to Mustang is made by private 4×4 jeep. These are tough cars (such as a Land Cruiser or others) which are suited to the rugged roads in the North. On the highway (approximately 6-7 hours) we drive Kathmandu to Pokhara.

After a rest and sightseeing day in Pokhara, the jeep journey into Mustang begins on Day 5. The jeep is flexible allowing us to visit places of interest, villages, and viewpoints along the route. You can pack your baggage (which is normally at the back or a roof rack). Once you visit Mustang, the same vehicle takes you back to Pokhara and then Kathmandu.

You can also do this by one-way flight (such as flying Jomsom back to Pokhara). However, flights to and from Jomsom are often delayed or canceled due to strong winds and changing weather conditions, so they cannot always be relied upon. Most travelers therefore prefer the scenic overland drive as a consistent part of the tour.

Please note that the road beyond Jomsom can occasionally be blocked by landslides or rockfall, particularly during the monsoon months (June–August). Delays are possible, though our guides and drivers will arrange safe passage or alternative plans if this occurs.

In Upper Mustang, it is difficult to keep in touch. Hotels Kathmandu has good mobile network (4G) and Wi-Fi. Pokhara you will have good mobile network (4G) and Wi-Fi at hotels. However, after entering Mustang, there is sporadic or no cell coverage.

It occasionally has a weak signal in major villages such as Jomsom or Lo Manthang, but otherwise you will spend most of your time offline. Up to Jomsom, there is occasional Ncell mobile coverage, but beyond that signals are very patchy. In Lo Manthang, some lodges now provide Wi-Fi through solar power or small repeaters.

It is still slow and unreliable, but more lodges are offering it than before. Treat it as a chance for a digital detox and let friends and family know you may be offline most of the time. Our guide will have a local phone and can receive messages out in case of an emergency as long as there is signal. Otherwise, you can experience the freedom of social media when you are on your Upper Mustang Jeep Tour.

Our tour package is meant to be very comprehensive however; you will still require some cash to spend on personal expenses. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, breakfast is included at your hotel, while lunch and dinner are on your own (around $15 per meal in average restaurants). Once the jeep journey into Mustang begins (Day 5 onward), all main meals — breakfast, and lunch, and dinner— are included in the package.

Any extra snacks, bottled drinks, or personal choices are additional. Meals are served with tea and boiled water, but in case you are fond of bottled mineral water, it is an additional fee (around $1–2.70 per bottle in Mustang). Additional budget items: charging electronics or internet at lodges (approximately $1-3 per time), taking a hot shower in a teahouse and giving tips to your guide and driver at the end of the tour.

In Nepal, tour guides and hotel staff often speak English, and the person who guides us on the Upper Mustang overland tour will speak fluent English. This implies that you will not have any difficulties when it comes to communication in your group as well as with us.

The local Loba people in the Mustang region speak both Nepali and a Tibetan-related dialect. English is limited, but locals are welcoming and your guide will help translate to make communication smooth and enjoyable. It is not difficult to know a few simple words in Nepali, it is always pleasant to say Namaste (Hello) or Dhanyabad (Thanks) and definitely it will leave a smile on the face of the person you are talking to.

The team will check permits, travel plans and clarify any questions to ensure that you are well prepared. Then have a welcome dinner of traditional Nepali cuisine. The first day offers the right balance of rest and preparation to unwind after your tour to enjoy Nepal and its warm hospitality.

Attractions and Highlights of Upper Mustang Overland Tour

Kathmandu Sightseeing and Cultural Exploration of UNESCO Heritage Sites

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour starts with a cultural introduction to the Nepal cultural capital, Kathmandu. This busy city hosts a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and each of them gives an idea of the spiritual and artistic heritage of the country. You will go around the quaint patterns of the Patan Durbar Square, where the wooden windows are carved and the temples are hundreds of years old, which demonstrate the Newari art.

You will turn prayer wheels with monks and have panoramic views of the valley at Swayambhunath, also referred to as the Monkey Temple. Pashupatinath Temple is worth visiting, as you can be closer to the Hindu traditions as you observe daily rituals by the Bagmati River.

Close by, Boudhanath Stupa introduces you to the world of Buddhist worship with prayer flags fluttering overhead and pilgrims on the white dome in meditation. Every location narrates about the rich historical life of Kathmandu and its culture. These locations are brought alive on guided tours that infuse life into these locations with legends and history, providing you with insight into the spiritual and cultural traditions you will experience during your Upper Mustang Overland Tour.

Kathmandu to Pokhara Scenic Drive

The ride between Kathmandu and Pokhara is one of the highlights at the beginning of the Upper Mustang Overland Tour. After leaving the bustling streets of the capital, the road follows the Prithvi Highway, meandering alongside the Trisuli River and passing through green hills and terraced fields. In the road, you will pass some small towns and some local farmers with baskets of fruit and will have to wave at children on their way to school.

The landscape is continuously changing, with high cliffs and fertile valleys. On clear days the snowy Annapurna range and Manaslu range can be seen in the distance, providing you with your first view Himalayas. We will stop in small roadside restaurants where we can take a break, drink Nepali tea, and take pictures of the river or hills. Late in the afternoon the drive takes you to Pokhara, a quiet city by the Phewa Lake.

Phewa Lake and Sunrise at Sarangkot in Pokhara

In the early morning, we  will drive to Sarangkot hill to see one of the most beautiful sunrises of Nepal. With the rays of light, as they fall first upon the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Machhapuchhre mountains, the mountains are of gold in the morning sky. The day proceeds slowly after the breakfast at Phewa Lake. We can take a quiet boat ride, play in the small Tal Barahi Temple that is located on an island in the lake or just sit back and enjoy the reflections of the lake on the hills and mountains.

The sightseeing of Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave further diversify the day, and the International Mountain Museum is a truly interesting source of information about the culture of the Himalayas and the history of climbing. The serenity of Pokhara and its lakeside cafes with the mountain scenery is the ultimate combination of relaxation and adventure before the tough trail into Mustang.

Drive from Pokhara to Jomsom

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour becomes more of an adventure than a comfort ride on the road to Jomsom. Leaving the greenery of Pokhara in the past, the jeep enters the Kali Gandaki Gorge, flanked by Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, following the Kali Gandaki River.

The smooth road quickly becomes a dirt road, in winding through isolated valleys and villages. You will cross Tatopani, a natural hot spring, and the Rupse Waterfall that falls along the road. When we get up to Jomsom, the air will be dry and windy, and it is a good indication that we have arrived in the high-altitude desert of Mustang.

A sightseeing of Lo Manthang

The cultural centre of the Upper Mustang Overland Tour is called Lo Manthang. This walled city was established in the 14th century and reflects the Tibetan traditions and ancient structures. We can walk its narrow alleys and come across monasteries with beautiful murals, such as Thubchen and Jampa Gompa.

The King Palace remains at the center, the locals spin prayer wheels, children play in the courtyards and artisans weave carpets. We can view flat-roofed houses with desert landscapes on the city walls. Lo Manthang is not only a historical place but also a living village, which is why it is one of the most outstanding locations in the Upper Mustang Overland Tour.

Chhoser Caves and Ancient Monasteries

A short drive out of Lo Manthang will bring us to Chhoser, which is known by the presence of caves of the cliffs and monasteries. The Jhong Cave has numerous rooms cut into the rock, once used for shelter and meditation. In the same area, Nyphu Monastery merges with the cliffs with butter lamps being lit next to ancient thangka paintings.

Another place to visit is Ghar Gompa, which is one of the oldest monasteries of Mustang. These holy places indicate that Mustang has a strong Buddhist culture and they are real landmarks of the Upper Mustang Overland Tour.

Visit to Muktinath Temple

The special trip of the Upper Mustang Overland Tour is Muktinath, a sacred place of Hindus and Buddhists which is 3,710 m high. Pilgrims take baths under 108 water spouts and pray at the shrine of the eternal flame where there is a natural co-existence of fire and water.

The temple is peaceful and inspiring with prayer flags and Himalayan Mountains around it. Muktinath is a cultural and spiritual destination of the tour as the scenery of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and the Kali Gandaki Valley are visible.

Mustang High-Altitude Desert Landscapes

The high altitude desert is one of the distinct characteristics of the Upper Mustang Overland Tour. At this point, cliffs, canyons, and barren plains wander through a theatrical terrain of red and gold in color. There are a lot of hidden caves and big valleys at every turn, and in spring, wildflowers are growing and blue sheep are wandering over the land. Millions of stars fill the sky at night. This clear but beautiful desert makes it otherworldly and gives the trip an adventurous feel.

Cultural Interactions with Loba people

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour presents valuable experiences with the local people of Mustang, Loba. Their Tibetan-based culture is still alive in their festivals, day-to-day rituals and friendly hospitality. You can have butter tea in a teahouse, or you can go and watch locals weaving, or you can attend prayers with villagers in a monastery.

In case your visit coincides with the Tiji Festival, you will be able to see colorful mask dances and old rituals at Lo Manthang. The Loba people also make the journey appear more personal and cultural.
