Overview of Nepal and Tibet Tour

The Nepal and Tibet Tour is a 10 day journey that brings you the best of two famous Himalayan destinations, Nepal and Tibet, in one trip. It is a blend of exciting Nepal culture and serene Tibetan spirituality that gives you an ideal combination of history, nature and living in the mountains without difficult trekking and lengthy traveling days.

Your journey begins in Nepal where you visit the ancient temples, crowded squares and holy places of Kathmandu valley. You then go to Pokhara, a small and beautiful city on the lake, with snow capped mountains. In this case, you can have a peaceful trip with a boat on a Phewa Lake and observe the golden sunrise on the Annapurna Range in the Australian Camp. These scenes reveal the beauty and serenity of Nepal.

From Nepal, The Nepal and Tibet Tour take you to Tibet which is a land of mountains, monasteries, and deep faith. In the capital, Lhasa, the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street are some of the places that you will visit where the air is filled with pilgrims, monks, and prayer flags that create an air that is full of devotion and peace. Both locations will provide you with an idea of the rich culture and spiritual existence of Tibet.

This tour is at a slow pace that allows you to relax in each location taking your time. You will spend sufficient time in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Lhasa to explore and relax. Guided sightseeing, personal transportation, and comfortable accommodation make the trip relaxing and comfortable to Travelers of both ages.

The Nepal and Tibet Tour is perfect for anyone who wants to experience the culture, people, and landscapes of the Himalayas in a short time. It is an easy, organized adventure, which allows you to explore the marvel of Nepal and Tibet in a single unforgettable journey.

Good To Know

This Nepal and Tibet tour can be done by beginners and families. No long and high treks are included, there are short walks and sightseeing of the city. In Nepal, a two-hour optional trek to Australian Camp (2,055 m) is the steepest climb, which is moderate and not obligatory. The cultural tours, walks and driving or flying to the destinations comprise most of the itinerary.

The journey is comfortable because of good roads and knowledgeable guides. In general, it is possible to recommend a brief Nepal Tibet trip that is rather an exploration and fun journey than a challenge to the strength of any traveler. This journey is more of a cultural adventure, a sightseeing drive as well as an exploration of the local community than a physical challenge. We will move with a slow pace and this makes it an ideal route to every traveler.

We will take the first day in Tibet where the altitude is more so that we take rest and acclimatize ourselves to the environment so that everyone becomes comfortable. Our guides will take care of all the details and will also offer some help whenever necessary. This tour is an ideal combination of adventure and rest as people can walk without any challenges.

It cover short distances, and enjoy high-quality accommodation with ease, which is why this tour is an excellent option and can be made by any person at a normal fitness level. Travelers with serious heart or lung conditions should get medical advice before joining because Lhasa is at high altitude.

This tour is available all the year round, although the most suitable seasons are spring and autumn. The period between September and November has the benefit of clear mountain sight and local festivals in Nepal and Tibet which is the ideal time to have a Nepal and Tibet tour. During spring (March to May), rhododendrons will be in bloom in Nepal, and it will be pleasant at Lhasa.

The monsoon rains fall on the Kathmandu and Pokhara valleys during the summer period (June to August) and therefore, there will be some rainfall in Kathmandu and Pokhara, but Tibet is mostly dry and sunny, being high up on the plateau. Lhasa (December to February) is cold, and in Nepal cities, it is cool but can be handled; the number of tourists reduces, which provides a more peaceful experience. Whatever the season, prepare the pack layers against temperature variations and a nice jacket against cool mornings or elevated places.

You can enjoy the Nepali, Tibetan, Chinese, and international foods in the course of your journey. In Nepal, enjoy food such as dal bhat (lentil curry with rice), momos (steamed dumplings) and Kathmandu specialties in Nepal restaurants. Cafes along the lakeside of Pokhara have a variety of food items including fresh trout to pizza to suit Western taste.

Trying traditional tsampa (barley flour porridge roasted) and buttery yak tea are also a part of the culture of Tibet, and in Lhasa restaurants, Chinese and Indian cuisines are offered as well. It is best to consume bottled or boiled water and tap water should be avoided. One can easily find bottled water, tea, and soft drinks.

During the elevated altitude in the Lhasa, avoid alcohol and maintain water or hot tea. Nepal and Tibet also have their own drinks that are worth a taste (such as the lassi yogurt drinks in Nepal or sweet Tibetan milk tea), though make sure that they are served in a clean place. In cities, it is quite simple to choose vegetarian and vegan options, and in any case, the tour can offer special diets.

Altitude sickness (AMS) is an issue during this 10 days Nepal and Tibet tour since Lhasa is located at an altitude of 3,680 m (12,070 ft). The positive thing is that the itinerary is created in such a way that it would be possible to acclimate progressively. The initial days of the trip will be spent in Nepal (the cities of Kathmandu, 1,350 m and Pokhara, 822 m) and then you will fly to Tibet.

The time of arrival in Lhasa will be followed by a rest day and a light activity. Mild symptoms such as a headache, fatigue, or short breath are common at the beginning. To reduce the problems, sleep well, drink water and do not engage in strenuous activity or take alcohol when you arrive in Tibet. Our guides will keep track of the condition of everyone.

At this altitude, Serious cases of altitude sickness are rare at this altitude, but still possible. Our guide will carry simple first aid kit and understand how to act in case someone feels ill. Travelers with heart or lung conditions should consult their doctor before flying to high altitude. Diamox or other drugs are also preventive but your doctor must recommend this medication before the trip. With a few rules and allowing your body time to acclimatize, you can be able to safely experience the high altitude wonders of Tibet under this Nepal and Tibet tour.

This trip does not need any intensive training. But with some preparation, you will enjoy it more. In case you lead a very sedentary life, begin to walk or jog a little, a few weeks before the departure. It is helpful to develop endurance in walking around the city on tours or the hiking option in Nepal which is optional. Endurance can be enhanced by simple exercise such as climbing stairs or practicing yoga or taking a bike ride.

Basically, when you can walk a few hours at a leisurely pace as well as work on several flights of stairs, you are fit to be on this short Nepal Tibet tour. It focuses more on cultural experiences than physical activity. Bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes as you will be walking around palaces, temples, and markets.

It is equally crucial to have mental flexibility and the spirit of adventure as it is to be physically fit at the same time you will be exposed to new cultures, foods, and environments. Be ready to be open, to be patient, to be curious and you will have a rich experience.

Nepal provides visa on arrival to most countries (including US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, etc.). A 15-day tourist visa (currently approximately 30 dollars) is enough in case of 10 days stay. One can complete an application form online or at Kathmandu airport and pay the fee at the immigration.

Tibet is the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and has special entry requirements. You will require Tibet Travel Permit which is done by our team in Lhasa through a local Tibetan travel agency. We do this paperwork after booking, you need to provide us with a clear scan of the passport at least 3-4 weeks before. It is a group visa to China that our staff will assist in obtaining over the course of Day 2 in Kathmandu.

It takes your original passport over a few days and a passport photograph. All necessary visas and permits for the Nepal and Tibet tour are facilitated by us, making the process smooth. Finally, to the short hike to the Australian Camp, we will issue you with the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS card, so you are all set on every side.

Your safety is our top priority during The Nepal and Tibet Tour. Both nations are safe though caution is always good. Bring some personal medications if any. Eat freshly cooked foods in Nepal, and do not consume raw salads or street foods. The altitude is high in Tibet, and therefore, one should walk slowly, take numerous breaks, and avoid alcohol.

Do not leave out your valuables in the busy places and keep your passport and permits in Lhasa. In Nepal, be careful when passing through main streets. We have our own transport and trained guides that make our trip safe. Our team is assisting first aid and rapid response in the case of an emergency. A simple care and awareness will give you a relax tour.

The Nepal and Tibet Tour uses safe and comfortable transport throughout. You will make short scenic flights of approximately 30 minutes Kathmandu to Pokhara and 1 hour and 30 minutes Kathmandu to Lhasa which will save a lot of time in traveling and give a great view of the Himalayan range. In Nepal, airport transfers and sightseeing are done in a private car or a van, where in Tibet, you will be traveling in a local private van or mini bus and a driver.

The Nepal roads are usually congested though our skilled drivers make it safe. In Tibet, the main tourist roads are well maintained. On the optional Australian Camp visit, a private jeep will transport you to the trailhead. We will tour places such as the Potala Palace at a measured pace, because of the altitude and stairs.

It is a 10-day itinerary that is a perfect combination of Nepal and Tibet but can be adapted to your interests and time. When there is not enough time, you can take a short 7-day trip that may exclude Pokhara and include Kathmandu and Lhasa only. You can extend the vacation with additional time in places such as Chitwan National Park to have a jungle safari or even Bhutan to experience three countries of the Himalayas.

Those who appreciate adventure may include a brief walk in Nepal or use overland routes between Kathmandu and Lhasa via the Kyirong border, which provides an opportunity to view Everest North Base Camp. Both of them demand more days of acclimatization. Whether you want more culture, nature, or mountain views, we will be happy to tailor The Nepal and Tibet Tour to match your travel plans perfectly.

Most major costs are covered in The Nepal and Tibet Tour, but it’s wise to plan for some personal expenses. You will pay your own lunches and dinners in Nepal, where a local dish will cost USD 5–10, whereas a nicer restaurant meal will cost USD 15–20. Drinks, bottled water and alcohol are optional. You also will have to pay visa fees, in Nepal around USD 30 entry visa and the China group visa at Kathmandu USD 90-175.

It is also normal to tip in case you are pleased with the service (about USD 5–10 per day to the guide and USD 3–5 per day to the driver). Carry some spare money as a souvenir, laundry or SIM card, or personal needs. Extras normally require a budget of USD 300–400 per person for the trip. You can enjoy your tour to the fullest without secret catch-ups with proper planning.

Language will never be a problem during The Nepal and Tibet Tour. In Nepal, English is commonly used among guides, hotel workers and shopkeepers particularly in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Simple words such as Namaste (hello) are a very impressive way to learn. Tibet has the Tibetan language as the primary one, and Mandarin Chinese is also widely spoken.

Your Tibetan guide is fluent in English and will assist you in interaction with locals. It is always nice to say good wishes such as Tashi Delek. Signs and menus used in tourist places are usually written in English although some are only written in Chinese or Tibetan. Other non-verbal movements such as smiling or the Namaste gesture are also effective in the two nations. The locals are friendly, and English speaking guides make it easy, warm and enjoyable as you go on this tour.

Attractions and Highlights of Nepal and Tibet Tour

Tour the Cultural Wonders of Kathmandu and Lhasa

We will see two lovely capital cities Kathmandu in Nepal and Lhasa in Tibet. We will visit World Heritage temples and palaces in Kathmandu, explore ancient squares and the blend of Hindu and Buddhist cultures. We will explore such sites as Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple) and Boudhanath Stupa and observe every day candle, incense, and prayer flag worship. We shall visit the heart of the Tibetan Buddhism in Lhasa. We will visit Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor area where pilgrims walk and pray. We will also meet some friendly local people to know about local food and local lifestyle. This cultural experience is one of the main highlights of the Nepal and Tibet tour.

Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple

We will explore two of the most holy treasures in Tibet in a day, the Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple. We will slowly climb the steps of the Potala palace, see the great halls and the golden shrines of the previous Dalai Lamas. On the top, we will get a beautiful view of the city of Lhasa and the mountains in the distance.

We will later go to the Jokhang Temple where butter lamps and soft chanting fill the air. We will see the sacred Jowo Shakyamuni statue and participate in local pilgrims as they revolve around the temple to worship. Such trips will give us a glimpse of the spiritual inner world of Tibet and they will leave great memories of religion and calmness.

Drepung and Sera monasteries

We will also explore two excellent monasteries around Lhasa, Drepung and Sera, to understand more about the monastic life in Tibet. We will visit serene courtyards, big prayer rooms and beautiful murals at Drepung Monastery. We can find monks reading, chanting or smiling at us as we pass by. We will then go to Sera Monastery, which is known due to lively monk debates after lunch.

We will see monks clapping and talking about the teachings of Buddhism in the courtyard, full of energy and happiness. Although we may not know the language, the air will be filled with the spirit of learning and faith. These tours will provide us with a cozy understanding of the living Tibetan practices and spiritual resilience.

Barkhor Market and Pilgrim Circuit

We shall walk softly round Barkhor Street, the centre of old Lhasa. In this case, we will accompany local pilgrims who walk clockwise around Jokhang Temple. And we will witness men turning prayer-wheels and muttering mantras, and displaying great piety. We will visit colourful market stalls with prayer flags, jewelry, incense and hand made crafts on our way.

We may make polite conversation with the local shopkeepers, take a hot cup of Tibetan tea, or just have fun. The voices of prayer, the odor of incense, and the cheerfulness of pilgrims will make it a really moving experience. A walk around Barkhor will make us feel like members of the daily Tibetan life, simple, earnest, and spiritual.

Australian Camp and Himalayan Views at Pokhara

We will also have some of the best mountain sceneries in Nepal without any trek. In Pokhara, we will get up early and go to Sarangkot and see the sunrise over the Himalayas. The golden rays will first hit Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and the beautiful Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain). It will be a calm and encouraging experience.

We will make another brief, easy stroll to Australian Camp later, through fields and wood. On top of the mountain, we will sit silently and observe the splendid view of the Annapurna range. We will drink hot tea, listen to mountain air, and watch the silent beauty of nature. These mountain experiences will remain in our hearts even after the trip.

Nepal and Tibet Cultural Experiences

In both Nepal and Tibet we will get numerous opportunities to explore local culture. We will explore Nepal by walking through ancient towns, artisans working, and trying traditional foods such as dal bhat and momos. We will have a cultural dinner, music, dance, and will know more about Nepal and its numerous traditions.

We will find friendly locals in Tibet, as well as family households (where possible) and enjoy a cup of butter tea as we get to know more about the daily life. We will walk with pilgrims, visit in various colourful markets, and hear the stories of our local guides. These little, authentic experiences will make us relate to both cultures in an emotional manner. We will not only feel as visitors but also as friends, by the end of our journey.

Is This Trip Beginner-Friendly?

Yes, we will have a smooth and comfortable ride that anybody, including first-time travellers, will be comfortable. Our trip will be primarily by air and by car, with brief and comfortable walks. In Nepal, we will be at low altitude and any hiking like Australian Camp will be optional.

In Tibet, we will rest on the first day in Lhasa to adapt to the altitude. Our pace will be slow, we will drink much water, and rest when we must. Our loving guides will never leave us without checking our condition and give some friendly guidance. This tour is easy to join by many families, seniors and new travelers. We will go at a slow pace and enjoy every spot in full comfort.

Private Trip vs Group Tour

You will have two travel options: a small group tour or a private tour. When you travel with a group, you will travel with friendly people. you will have experiences, spend time together, and have cheaper prices. There will be a good plan and our guide will make sure that everything is fine. In case you want a personal trip, you can have our guide, driver, and complete freedom.

You may delay till later, or have more time at the place you prefer, or make minor adjustments to the plan. Tours that are privately arranged are a bit more expensive and more personal. Whether in a private or a group travel, you will enjoy a warm care, attention and a memorable trip throughout.

Trip Extension

We will be glad to offer an extension trip to anyone who wants to see more of the Himalayas after this 10 days Nepal and Tibet adventure. The experience is so motivating to many Travelers that they desire to keep on discovering more. You can stay longer in Nepal with a wildlife safari in Chitwan National Park, sightseeing flights over the mountain in Everest, or day tours to Bhaktapur and Patan to learn more of the heritage of the valley.

In case you like to hike, then we can include short walks like Poon hill or even longer walks like the Annapurna Circuit or even Everest Base Camp. We can continue your trip to Gyantse, Shigatse or even to the northern Everest Base Camp in Tibet, where we can also have a wonderful view.

We can organize the sacred Mount Kailash pilgrimage or a connecting visit to Bhutan to those who have more time. Whichever you want, we will take care of all the logistics, flights and permits making your extension an easy and pleasant complement to your main tour.

Photography & Drone Rules

During our Nepal and Tibet trip, we will get numerous opportunities to capture beautiful photographs but we must do so in a respectful manner. We will never take close photos of local people without seeking their permission or capture pictures of police, soldiers or restricted places.

Photography is generally not restricted in Nepal, but there are certain temples such as Pashupatinath or the house of Kumari which cannot permit photography. In Tibet, Some monasteries allow photos only in certain areas (sometimes for a small fee), but parts of sites like the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple are strictly no-photography.

We will not also disturb the prayer of monks or pilgrims. Drones are tightly regulated in the two countries and we highly recommend not to carry one. Our ground observations will produce great memories of the temples, people, and mountain scenery, and we will remain respectful and safe during every moment.

Cultural Festivals on the Trail

This will give us a great opportunity to attend local festivals provided that our travel schedule is in line with the festivals. Festivals celebrated in Nepal such as Dashain, Tihar, Holi, and Indra Jatra bring colour, lights, and happiness to the streets. We will observe the decoration of temples, happy families, and traditional dances and music. The festivals in Tibet like Losar (New Year), Saga Dawa, and Shoton are very spiritual.

We can even come across pilgrims strolling along Barkhor, monks with giant thangkas, or families praying and celebrating. In case we are in town during one of these events, we will reschedule to allow us to participate or spectate in good taste. Both Nepal and Tibet festivals demonstrate the beauty of their religion and community spirit, and leave us with a memorable cultural experience in our trip.

Tips for First Time Traveler

Our first time trip to Nepal will be an adventure and a travel full of good hospitality. The Nepali people are polite and friendly, and you should meet them with a smile and Namaste with our palms together. You should also dress decently, take off shoes when visiting temples or houses and use the right hand whenever giving or receiving something.

You should be watchful in the areas with many people, keep our valuables locked up, and use the road closely because the traffic is not always free. You should consume bottled or filtered water, dine out in clean restaurants, and keep hand sanitizer in your pockets. You can change money at the counters, retain small notes to be used locally and keep in mind that tipping is welcome but not compulsory. You can keep in touch with your family and friends by purchasing a local SIM card or by Wi-Fi.

Above all, you should not violate local customs and traditions, take photographs without asking, or be unkind in every place you go. You should also appreciate the beauty, culture, and people of Nepal with patience, an open mind, and it will become your first visit to Nepal safe, smooth, and unforgettable.
